Redeeming the Time by Jonathan Edwards (1703-175)

"Redeeming the time." (Ephesians 5:16, KJV) Christians should not only look for ways to improve the opportunities they have, for their own advantage, but also labor to rescue others from their evil ways; so that God might defer his anger, and they might be redeemed from that terrible destruction, which, when it does come, would put an end to the time of divine patience in their lives. And it may be because of this, that the reason is added, "Because the days are evil." It is as if the apostle had said, the wickedness of the times tends to accelerate the coming judgments of God, but your holy and guarded walk will tend to redeem time from the devouring jaws of those calamities. Our text today commands us to set a high value on our opportunities in life and to be very careful that they are not lost; and we are therefore exhorted to exercise wisdom and caution, in order that we may make the most of our time. Therefore it appears, that the time allocated for us in our l...

Are You Forgiven? R. F. Becker

“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered”—Romans 4:7 Friend, I am writing to you today because time is short. The day of grace is fast slipping away. The great Day of Judgment is drawing nearer every hour. The thread of life is slowly but surely winding up. The sands of time for each of us will soon run down to rise no more. You and I are traveling far faster than we think through time towards eternity. Only a few more fleeting  days and every soul of us will have gone forever to his own place of heaven or hell. Therefore I meet you in faithfulness and solemnness today and ask you only one question: Are you a forgiven soul? The words of Scripture at the top of this page set forth the greatest blessing that can ever come to man. It is the knowledge of the forgiveness of all sin. To have the conscious occurrence of this forgiveness is the only foundation for true happiness. But to be outwardly happy without this forgiveness as many people are, is to...

Where Are You Going? I.C. Herendeen, 1883-1982

TIME FLIES. The days, the weeks, the months and the years slip by with incredible speed, and are gone before we realize it. It seems as though they no more begin, than they are gone, passed into eternity. So, too, the happenings of the day soon recede into the distant past. Everything in this world is fleeting and transitory—nothing is stable and lasting. "We spend our years as a tale that is told" ( Psalm 90:9 ). Being busily engrossed with the occupations, labors and pursuits of life we are more or less insensible to the swiftness of passing time, of the solemn fact that life itself is fast getting away from us, and that the end of our earthly journey is speedily and surely approaching. Or, if we are conscious that our time is getting short, either we dismiss the thought or reckon that somehow or other all will be well in the end. How important it is that we keep in mind that our death is ever on the horizon, that we are but a heartbeat from it, and that when we die, we wi...

A godly man weeps

(from Thomas Watson's "The Godly Man's Picture")   David sometimes  sang with his harp ; and sometimes the  organ of his eye  wept: "I water my couch with my  tears " (Psalm 6:6). Christ calls his spouse his "dove" (Song 2:14). The dove is a  weeping  creature.  Grace dissolves and liquefies the soul , causing a spiritual thaw.  The sorrow of the heart, runs out at the eye  (Psalm 31:9). The Rabbis report that the same night on which Israel departed from Egypt towards Canaan, all the  idols  of Egypt were broken down by lightning and earthquake. Just so, at that very time at which men go forth from their natural condition towards heaven, all the  idols of sin  in the heart must be broken down by repentance! A  melting heart  is the chief branch of the covenant of grace (Ezek. 36:26), and the product of the Spirit: "I will pour upon the house of David the spirit of grace, and they shall look upon me wh...

“Be Content,” J.C. Ryle, 1885

Be Content What With You have
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." -Hebrews 13:5 The words which head this paper are soon spoken, and often cost the speaker very little. Nothing is cheaper than good advice! Everybody imagines that he can give his neighbor good counsel, and tell him exactly what he ought to do.

“be content with such things as ye have”

These words are very simple. A little child might easily understand them. They contain no high doctrine; they involve no deep metaphysical question; and yet, as simple as they are—the duty which these words enjoin on us, is one of the highest practical importance to all Christians. Yet to practice the lesson which heads this paper is very hard. To talk of contentment in the day of health and prosperity is easy enough; but to be content in the midst of poverty, sickness, trouble, disappointments, and losses—i...

The Great Comforter

"It is the Spirit who  quickens ; the flesh profits nothing." John 6:63 All real religion begins with the  quickening of the Spirit.  When we experience this . . .   we begin to breathe after spiritual things;   we open our eyes in a new world;   we hunger and thirst after righteousness;   and at length taste that the Lord is gracious. We then have . . .   new thoughts,   new desires,   new hopes,   new fears,   new joys, and   new sorrows. The  eye  fixes on Christ, the  heart  goes out to Christ, and the  chief desire  of the soul is to be like Christ. The Spirit not only quickens us at first — but all through life we need and are dependent on the Spirit's quickening. He quickens us  to  pray, and He quickens us  in  prayer. It is His quickening which puts . . .   life into our graces,   energy into our prayers,   confidence into our expectations, and ...

HELL IS REAL, DON'T GO THERE

It is 02 nd April 2020. That place had no exit. I found myself locked up in a cell in a very unfamiliar world. I had a mark, an implant on my wrist flesh. Next to my cell to the right was a Chinese lady that appeared to have had a very rough time with my now new abode. She was weary and worn out, perhaps due to the rough long encounter and experience with the extremism, her face presented hopelessness as pessimism reigned supreme. I was bordered by similar so many cells with millions of occupants. Everybody was crying for freedom that was not promising. Then a presence showed up. A figure I later realized was the leader in that place. He was kind of doing a round trip slightly dissatisfied with his harvest. He was keen to check the identities or rather the marks intact. I moved closer to the entrance grill and extended my hands to him. “I don’t belong here,” I said. “There must be a problem. Get me out of here!” He stopped and looked at me, then said, “This is now your home!”...
