“Be Content,” J.C. Ryle, 1885

Be Content What With You have
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." -Hebrews 13:5 The words which head this paper are soon spoken, and often cost the speaker very little. Nothing is cheaper than good advice! Everybody imagines that he can give his neighbor good counsel, and tell him exactly what he ought to do.

“be content with such things as ye have”

These words are very simple. A little child might easily understand them. They contain no high doctrine; they involve no deep metaphysical question; and yet, as simple as they are—the duty which these words enjoin on us, is one of the highest practical importance to all Christians. Yet to practice the lesson which heads this paper is very hard. To talk of contentment in the day of health and prosperity is easy enough; but to be content in the midst of poverty, sickness, trouble, disappointments, and losses—i

The Great Comforter

"It is the Spirit who  quickens ; the flesh profits nothing." John 6:63 All real religion begins with the  quickening of the Spirit.  When we experience this . . .   we begin to breathe after spiritual things;   we open our eyes in a new world;   we hunger and thirst after righteousness;   and at length taste that the Lord is gracious. We then have . . .   new thoughts,   new desires,   new hopes,   new fears,   new joys, and   new sorrows. The  eye  fixes on Christ, the  heart  goes out to Christ, and the  chief desire  of the soul is to be like Christ. The Spirit not only quickens us at first — but all through life we need and are dependent on the Spirit's quickening. He quickens us  to  pray, and He quickens us  in  prayer. It is His quickening which puts . . .   life into our graces,   energy into our prayers,   confidence into our expectations, and   enables us to resist Satan, steadfast in the faith. If His quickening power is  withheld  —  we soon grow dull, cold,

HELL IS REAL, DON'T GO THERE

It is 02 nd April 2020. That place had no exit. I found myself locked up in a cell in a very unfamiliar world. I had a mark, an implant on my wrist flesh. Next to my cell to the right was a Chinese lady that appeared to have had a very rough time with my now new abode. She was weary and worn out, perhaps due to the rough long encounter and experience with the extremism, her face presented hopelessness as pessimism reigned supreme. I was bordered by similar so many cells with millions of occupants. Everybody was crying for freedom that was not promising. Then a presence showed up. A figure I later realized was the leader in that place. He was kind of doing a round trip slightly dissatisfied with his harvest. He was keen to check the identities or rather the marks intact. I moved closer to the entrance grill and extended my hands to him. “I don’t belong here,” I said. “There must be a problem. Get me out of here!” He stopped and looked at me, then said, “This is now your home!”

This very year you are going to die! by Samuel Davies

(This message was preached at Princeton College on January 1, 1761. The author died shortly after, on February 4--at the age of 37! Thus in a way— he   preached his own funeral sermon! ) "Thus says the Lord—I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.  This very year you are going to die! " Jeremiah 28:16 While we are entering upon the threshold of a new year, it may be proper for us to stand, and pause, and take a serious view of the occurrences that  may  happen to us this year—that we may be prepared to meet them. Future contingencies are indeed unknown to us; and this  ignorance  is as agreeable to our present state, and as conducive to our improvement and happiness—as our knowledge of the things which it concerns us to know. But though we cannot predict to ourselves the particular events that may befall us—yet the events of life in general, in a vague indeterminate view, are not so contingent and unknowable as to leave no room for rational suppositions, and

Sins of our country

Sins of our Nation   "When  disaster  comes to a city—has not the LORD caused it?" Amos 3:6 It concerns you all seriously to reflect upon your   own sins , and the sins of your   land —which have brought all these   calamities  upon us. If you believe that God governs the   world , if you do not abjure him from being the Ruler of your   country —then you must acknowledge that all the calamities of   war , and the threatening appearances of   famine —are ordered by his Providence! And if you believe that he is a   just  and   righteous  Ruler, you must also believe that he would not thus punish a righteous or a penitent people. We and our countrymen are sinners, aggravated sinners! God proclaims that we are such by his  judgments  now upon us: by withering fields and scanty harvests, by the sound of the trumpet and the alarm of  war . Our consciences must also bear witness to the same melancholy truth. And if my heart were properly affected, I would concur with the

We Must Be Holy!

Image
We must be Holy We must be holy on earth before we die—if we desire to go to heaven after death! If we hope to dwell with God forever in the life to come—we must endeavor to be like Him in the life that now is. We must not only admire holiness, and wish for holiness—we must   be  holy. Holiness cannot  justify  and  save  us. Holiness cannot cover our iniquities, make satisfaction for transgressions, pay our debts to God. Our best works are no better than filthy rags, when tried by the light of God's law. The righteousness which Jesus Christ brought in, must be our only confidence—and the blood of His atonement, our only hope. All this is perfectly true, and yet  we must be holy . We must be holy—because God in the Bible plainly commands it. "As He who has called you is holy—so be holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be holy—for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:15, 16). We must be holy—because this is one great end for which Christ came into the wor

Today, in a vision, I found myself standing on the beach facing the ocean. Then a strong wind started blowing from the sea towards the shore as thick dark clouds begun to form. a storm was forming. i could see the clear outline of the detailed clouds that had now formed and covered the entire expanse of the dark sky. T h e lightnings and rolls of thunder intensified the intensity and the gravity of the soon ravaging storm. Up to this to this time I stood mesmerized at how quickly the events unfolded. There was no clear distinction between the sea and the dark clouds, they had all been engulfed in the consuming darkness as the rolls of thunder intensified. Fear gripped me. it reigned supreme. The Lord the shifted my attention to a horseman that was stand a long the seashore but slightly further from my point. And he brought to my attention the panic that had stricken the people closer to the shore. it was not possible to escape whatever was inside this now considered demonized st
